41. REMATH: MATH-LEARNING EXPERIENCES OF BLACK STUDENTS IN NON-CREDIT-BEARING UNIVERSITY COURSES

Description

The goal of this research project is to explore the effects of remedial mathematics courses on first and second year students. We expect to uncover how students in mathematics remediation courses experience persistence in STEM related fields.
The sampling procedures will ensure that the 10 participants are exclusively African American men and women pursuing a diverse array of potential major concentrations.
Using a phenomenological approach, this research uses theoretical frameworks developed to study mathematics learning as a narrative construct. Analysis of interview transcripts through coding and categorizing will be used to recommend suggestions for course improvement.
