As the importance of mathematical modeling has been emphasized, more teacher education programs have prepared preservice teachers to learn about modeling. This study explores opportunities that secondary teacher preparation programs provide to learn about modeling in algebra. 48 course instructors and 10 focus groups at five universities were interviewed to answer questions related to algebraic modeling. With the analysis of the interview transcripts and related course materials, we found varying opportunities related to algebraic modeling. Specific examples of opportunities to learn about modeling and the participants’ perspectives on the opportunities can contribute to the study of modeling in teacher education.
