3-018 - Applied Developmental Scientists in Society: Planning for a Rewarding Career Outside of Academia

Sat, April 8, 8:30 to 10:00am, Austin Convention Center, Meeting Room 9A

Session Type: Conversation Roundtable

Integrative Statement

To improve human well-being across the globe, society needs individuals specifically trained in applied developmental science (Lerner, Fisher, and Weinberg, 2000) who can work effectively in applied settings. However, what do applied developmental psychologists do if they are not in academia? What types of careers are available to those trained in applied psychology? What else do students need to know beyond developmental theory and methods if they want to have a rewarding career outside of academia? The purpose of this roundtable is to bring together trained applied researchers working across a range of youth-focused settings to discuss life as an applied developmental scientist as well as how to position yourself for a rewarding applied career. Panelists will include individuals who train applied developmental scientists, early career scientists working in non-profit programs and research centers, and program officers working in grant-making organizations. Together, the panelists will stimulate a conversation around (1) society’s need for individuals with training in applied developmental science; (2) the type and viability of careers outside of academia; (3) how to prepare for and secure a rewarding applied career; and (4) what additional competencies beyond training in development is needed to be an effective applied developmental scientist. The roundtable will be moderated by Dr. Kelly Fisher, an academic who works at the intersection of science, policy, and practice and, as a result, will be instrumental in balancing and challenging the perspectives offered by the panel.
