Session Type: Conversation Roundtable
There is a complicated relationship between adolescents and their use (and abuse) of technology. Of particular importance is the harmful effects of technology use on adolescents’ sleep habits, specifically delayed bedtimes and daytime sleepiness. While many adolescent-specific interventions capitalize on this population’s penchant for technology – such as apps for suicide prevention (O’Brien et al., 2016) and web-based classes on healthy relationships (Levesque et al., 2016) – such innovations have not yet been utilized to address sleep problems. The purpose of this roundtable discussion is to explore the following question: Given the vast literature on the harmful effects of technology on sleep, does technology have the potential to play a helpful role in adolescent sleep interventions? We expect this discussion will encompass and advance both a theoretical understanding of the adolescent technology by sleep interaction, as well as specific action items. In other words, we expect this roundtable to generate concrete ideas to help researchers and clinicians better use technology for sleep interventions and leverage, for their benefit, adolescents' propensity for consuming technology.
