2-057 - Keys to Writing a Successful Research Proposal – Writing Your First grant Application for Federal Funding

Fri, April 7, 10:15 to 11:45am, Austin Convention Center, Meeting Room 4BC

Session Type: Federal Agency Symposium

Integrative Statement

Having a great research question that you are passionate about is just the first step! Join this group of federal Program and Review Officers as they elucidate how to operationalize, plan for and prepare your next/first grant or fellowship application. Writing a successful research proposal should always begin with well circumscribed and operationalized goals, methods, and analytic plans. Clearly identify what is already understood and on what work you are building. Similarly, bringing together the necessary resources to enable the project’s successful completion requires careful selection and articulation. Understand your audience (e.g., likely reviewers) and proactively anticipate their questions. If you are to be successful, all these steps require finding a clear fit between your research project and the funding agency’s mission and opportunities. Whether you are searching for graduate, post-doctoral, or new faculty funding, finding where you and your research fit into the goals of a funding agency can help you streamline your proposal and increase your success in getting funded. Finally, if this is your first foray into federal funding applications, it is essential that you seek out the right guide(s) who can help you complete each of these steps along your path to a federal grant award; federal agency Program Officers/Directors can and should be part of this team of guides. This session will walk you through the basics (i.e., minimum requirements common to most federal agencies) of how to write a successful grant application and answer your questions specific to each of the represented federal agencies.
