1-058 - Dual Language Learner Research: Federal Funding Opportunities and Investments

Thu, April 6, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Austin Convention Center, Meeting Room 4A

Session Type: Federal Agency Symposium

Integrative Statement

Children who are learning English in addition to a language spoken at home—known as dual language learners (DLLs)—constitute a growing segment of young children and school-age youth in the U.S. Improving the health, education, and well-being of this fast growing population requires rigorous research in developmental science on a broad array of issues related to early learning and development in DLLs as well as more effective federal programs serving DLLs. Federal agencies support research on DLLs and their families through a diverse set of research programs. This symposium will highlight funding opportunities and investments in DLL research at several federal funding agencies including the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) at the U.S. Department of Education, and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Presentations will include illustrative examples of funded projects at these institutions and discussion of opportunities for researchers at all levels (e.g., early career, senior). This symposium will aim to highlight the distinctive emphases in the research investments and funding opportunities of different federal agencies, provide researchers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about how to secure funding for their work, and stimulate broader interest in conducting research with this expanding population of children to help them thrive and succeed within their family, school, and society.
