Session Type: Pre-Conference Event
Background: As an organization with more than five thousand members spanning more than 50 countries, SRCD’s core mission is to advance developmental science and promote its use to improve human lives. Over the past months we have witnessed a period of significant geopolitical upheaval—in ways that have raised new challenges to our mission and priorities. Many members have expressed strong feelings that our core values and life work are under threat.
Goals: We are asking the panel—as thought-leaders with broad perspectives—to consider, How best to respond? The goal is to have an unscripted substantive discussion. Not to focus on politics, but rather to consider strategies that best leverage our expertise and science.
The Core Question: How can we (as individuals and as an organization) best leverage developmental science to have a positive impact on the future of children—all children—in these tumultuous times?
Major Themes: Education; Immigration; Social Equity; De-valuing of Science; threats to the funding of Science, Climate Change—particularly its impact on children (and the future of all children).
Format and Structure:
Ron Dahl will introduce the session and serve as moderator. Each panelist will begin with an opening statement that will include: a) brief description of the perspective they are bringing to this discussion; and b) some thoughts about the core question: How can we, as individual developmental scientists and/or as SRCD, best leverage our capacity to have a positive impact on the future of children—all children—in these tumultuous times?
This will be followed by a round of panelists responding to each other’s opening statements. The moderator will then pose some questions to the panelists and we will then open it up for audience questions and comments.
Registration: $30 for all member types.
Note: Register online when purchasing conference registration. Event will be capped at 150.
