2-010 - Exploring My Prospects: Journeys Outside of Academia

Fri, March 22, 8:00 to 9:30am, Baltimore Convention Center, Floor: Level 3, Room 317

Session Type: Professional Development Session

Integrative Statement

PhD level social scientists are needed in many diverse contexts and capacities. However, many doctoral students and early career scientists are not aware of the different avenues through which they can implement their skills. During this panel we plan to cover a range of PhD level career trajectories outside of academia, including ones within federal agencies, non-profit work, advocacy and the technology sector. We also will cover a range of diverse career stages (early vs. senior) and backgrounds (race, ethnicity, experiences, etc.). The goal of this session is to inform SRCD attendees who are predominately developmental scientists, psychologists, social scientists, and education scientists, about the unique ways that their PhD level training can be applied outside of the academic realm.
This professional development session will be led by Lorena Aceves, a first generation, Latina doctoral candidate and Institute of Education Sciences pre-doctoral fellow from the Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies. She will moderate the session and be the interface between the panelists and the session attendees. Panelist will include 1) Lina Guzman, Ph.D., the director of reproductive health and family formation and a senior research scientist at Child Trends, 2) Constance Lindsay, Ph.D., a research associate at the Urban Institute, 3) Wil Del Pilar, Ph.D., Ed Trust’s vice president of higher education policy and practice, 4) David Landy, Ph.D., an associate professor at Indiana University and a data scientist at Netflix, and 5) Diana McCallum, Ph.D. a senior researcher at Mathematica.

This session is co-sponsored by the Student and Early Career Council (SECC).
