Session Type: Professional Development Session
Communities of higher education have increasingly emphasized equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion. Colleges and universities are also the grounds upon which critical sociopolitical events have occurred (e.g., white supremacy rally at UVa; suspension of DACA policy; plight of refugee families fleeing war and environmental hazards). Even the daily lives of college students are imbued with socially-charged experiences (e.g., racist fliers, “chalkings”, controversial campus speakers, threatening e-mails, graffiti). These complex, rich environments of higher learning thus offer prime opportunities to discuss equity and justice, particularly in relation to developmental science. Yet, teacher-scholars often report feeling unequipped, unprepared, or uncomfortable effectively addressing such issues.
This workshop will focus on concrete strategies and ideas for helping faculty on college campuses navigate topics often deemed challenging to talk about, such as equity and justice, bias, status, and privilege. Organized on behalf of the SRCD Equity and Justice Committee, the invited panelists—Christia Spears Brown, Stacey Horn, Noelle Hurd, Laurie Kramer, and Rashmita Mistry—bring a wealth of expertise in addressing and incorporating equity and justice considerations across a range of specific aspects of diversity and inclusion (e.g., poverty/class/SES, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ability/disability) in both their undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship. The workshop will be interactive and allow attendees to role-play, brainstorm, and provide their own insight and experiences. One targeted outcome will include collaborating with the SRCD Teaching Committee to further build an online repository for teacher-scholars to share syllabi, resources, and classroom activities/ideas related to equity and justice.
