1-120 - Building a leadership career in global early child development

Thu, March 21, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Baltimore Convention Center, Floor: Level 3, Room 316

Session Type: Professional Development Session

Integrative Statement

Early child development lays the foundation for life-span health, education, psychological well-being, and economic capacity. Much of our awareness of global early child development stems from the work of Patrice Engle, a pioneer in global early child development who held positions in academia and in international agencies, and led the 2007 and 2011 series of papers on global child development in The Lancet. Following her death in 2012, we established the Patrice Engle Dissertation Grant within SRCD. In this highly competitive competition, applicants conducting research in low- and-middle income countries apply to receive a $5000. dissertation grant and a 2-year student SRCD membership.

This Professional Development Session brings together 4 of the earliest dissertation grantees, together with several senior SRCD members with leadership careers in global child development. In Phase #1, the dissertation grantees give brief (5 minutes) presentations on their dissertation research and current position and the SRCD members briefly outline their career trajectories (5 minutes). In Phase #2, the dissertation grantees pose career questions to the SRCD members and the SRCD members generate advice and recommendations regarding collaboration and a career in global early child development. In Phase #3, the audience, including other dissertation grantees, join in the conversation, moderated by the organizer. The session closes with a synthesis of recommendations for a leadership career in global early child development. By fostering an exchange between junior scholars and senior SRCD members, the session generates key elements for building a career as a leader in global early child development.
