Poster #11 - NSF Funding Opportunities for Research in Child Development

Integrative Statement

This poster, presented by Program Directors from the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) and the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), will describe current research funding opportunities at the National Science Foundation (NSF) for research on child development. It will lay out the differences among a range of programs in the two directorates with an eye toward making it clearer which program is most appropriate for which kind of proposal. Program Directors from both directorates will be on hand to discuss the programs with conference attendees and to entertain specific questions about potential submissions. Among programs within EHR, the newly revised EHR Core Research Program (ECR) supports fundamental (both basic and use-inspired basic) research on STEM learning and learning environments, research on broadening participation in STEM fields, and research on STEM workforce development. ECR seeks to create a multidisciplinary portfolio of awardees. The immediate goal of ECR awards is to move the scientific literature, with their impact on practice likely long-term and indirect. Discovery PreK-12 (DRK12) is a more applied research and development program. Projects build on prior research and development efforts and are expected to result in research-informed and field-tested outcomes and products that inform teaching and learning. DRK-12 has three major research and development strands: Assessment; Learning; and Teaching. The Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program seeks to advance understanding of the design and development of STEM learning opportunities for the public in informal environments; provide multiple pathways for broadening engagement in STEM learning experiences; advance innovative research on STEM learning in informal environments; and engage the public of all ages in learning STEM in informal environments. Among programs within SBE, the Science of Learning (SL) program aims to develop basic theoretical insights and fundamental knowledge about learning principles, processes, and constraints. Projects could span one or several fields; examine many domains, from molecules and cells to psychological and social behavior; and approach hypotheses using experiments, field studies, or analyses and modeling. The Developmental Sciences (DS) program supports basic research that increases our understanding of cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, and biological processes related to human development across the lifespan. Research supported by this program will add to our knowledge of the underlying developmental processes that support social, cognitive, and illuminating ways for individuals to live productive lives as members of society. Finally, Integrative Strategies for Understanding Neural and Cognitive Systems (NCS) is a cross-directorate program, focusing on four aspects of neural and cognitive systems that are current targets of converging interdisciplinary interests: Neuroengineering and Brain-Inspired Concepts and Designs; Individuality and Variation; Cognitive and Neural Processes in Realistic, Complex Environments; and Data-Intensive Neuroscience and Cognitive Science. It also seeks to stimulate Educational Neuroscience research.
