Understanding and improving fathering in the prenatal and postnatal period

Wed, April 7, 11:35am to 1:05pm EDT (11:35am to 1:05pm EDT), Virtual

Session Type: Paper Symposium

Abstract

Parenting research on fathers lacks behind that on mothers, even though fathers’ involvement in childcare has increased substantially over de last decades. The current symposium focuses on fathering in the prenatal and postnatal period. The first talk is about the association between prenatal oxytocin levels and paternal neural activity, and postpartum oxytocin and paternal behavior. The second talk focuses on paternal protective behavior and its associations with sensitivity, vasopressin, and oxytocin. The third talk will be on the effectiveness of a prenatal video-feedback intervention aimed at promoting positive parenting for expectant fathers using live ultrasound images. The final talk focuses on the quality of fathers’ and mothers’ observed interactions with their toddlers to better understand how parents jointly contribute to children’s social competence. Together these talks shed light on the neural and hormonal basis of fathering, how paternal behavior can be improved by interventions and the importance of paternal behavior for child outcomes.
