Reproducibility and Reuse of Child Development Data

Fri, April 9, 2:45 to 4:15pm EDT (2:45 to 4:15pm EDT), Virtual

Session Type: Professional Development Session

Abstract

Data sharing requirements, challenges of collecting data during COVID-19, and reduced research budgets make analysis of secondary data ever more attractive to child development researchers. This session, led by Lynette Hoelter, Joy Jang, Susan Jekielek, and Sandra Tang, and organized by Chelsea Samples-Steele, will focus on resources available to those wishing to contribute data to a repository and those looking to use secondary data in their research and teaching. Specifically, we will cover trusted sources of secondary data in child development, options for safely sharing data with other researchers, and the ways in which data sharing and reuse strengthen the scientific values of transparency and reproducibility. We will talk about the role of data repositories in assisting researchers with data sharing and reuse.

Participants will tour ICPSR’s data relevant to child development research including information about some of the foundational longitudinal studies in the field. Participants will learn about the topical collections of data specific to those studying or teaching courses on childhood, adolescence, human development, and the correlates and outcomes thereof. Also covered will be ways in which to search for data, information to help users evaluate a data collection’s utility for their work, and how to access the data. We will offer in-session exercises to search for data along with the presenters, using keywords reflective of their own interests. Attendees will be encouraged to think about ways in which they might use secondary data in their research and teaching.
