Session Type: Workshop
Presented by Elizabeth Gerhardt and Vanessa Figueiredo.
The “Day in the Life” (DITL) workshop invites researchers and practitioners interested in conducting sustainable developmental studies in diverse cultures and life spans to engage in an exchange regarding this innovative methodology. This workshop aims to introduce a new qualitative, quasi-ecological method for collecting data among individuals, especially those in psychosocially sensitive contexts. The DITL methodology uses video and audio recording of an entire day of a participant’s life, along with photos elicited through the participants point of view, to gain an in-depth understanding of the lives of those in different situations. This workshop will use a combination of exercises, facilitated discussions, resource sharing, and discussions of results from previous studies to provide participants with tangible concepts and cases to consider how to develop innovative research in their fields. During the final discussion, we will invite a previous pair of participants from DITL to answer any questions from the group. The DITL workshop will familiarize the attendees with multimodal and reflective techniques developed to build reciprocal and trusted relationships with study participants while providing discussion spaces to develop ideas as a group.
