The Early Childhood Longitudinal Studies (ECLS) Program at NCES

Abstract

This poster will present an overview of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Studies (ECLS) Program at the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). The ECLS Program’s four cohort studies provide nationally representative data on children’s early learning and development, early care and education experiences, transition into formal schooling, and progress throughout the elementary grades. The poster will display information on all four studies including background on sample and study design. In addition, the poster will outline the types of research questions that can be answered with ECLS data, current ECLS data accessibility, and resources offered to users of ECLS data. Greatest detail will be provided on the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011), the most recent study for which ECLS data are available. For example, an overview of the ECLS-K:2011 data collection instruments, both direct child assessments and non-assessment study measures, will be shown. Updates on the newest ECLS study, the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2022-23 (ECLS-K:2023), will also be available.
