Early Learning and Development Research at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development

Abstract

The Child Development and Behavior Branch (CDBB) will present on current priorities and initiatives from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD; NIH; HHS). Research priorities of the Early Learning and School Readiness Program will be highlighted, including longitudinal observational, prevention and early intervention research studies with children ages birth through 8 years from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds whose primary outcomes are the development of executive function skills and the acquisition of school readiness skills, and abilities resulting in persistent gains in academic and social functioning and related long-term health and economic outcomes. In addition, highlights from the new NICHD Strategic Plan, along with relevant research priorities from other programs within the CDBB and other Branches, will be presented, including those addressing neurocognitive development, child social-emotional development and family processes, dual language learners, early literacy and numeracy and related disabilities, human-animal interaction research, and pediatric primary care-based behavioral and health promotion interventions.
