Poster #35 - Development and Validation of a Brief Scale Assessing Chinese Adolescents’ Perceptions of Parental Responses to Children’s Negative Emotions

Fri, March 24, 10:30 to 11:15am, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Hall A-B

Abstract

This research aimed to develop and validate a brief scale assessing Chinese adolescents’ precepted parental responses to children’s negative emotions (PRCNE) (Brief-PRCNE). In Study 1 (N= 901, Mage = 13.39 years), factor analyses documented that the seven-factor structure fit the data best and suggested 35 items for the final version of the Brief-PRCNE. Brief-PRCNE scores demonstrated good internal consistency (Omega >.79) and convergent validity. Study 2 (N= 320, Mage = 13.54 years) established the measurement invariance of Brief-PRCNE in male and female parents and provided evidence for criterion validity by showing that Brief-PRCNE scores have close relations with parental emotion socialization goals and adolescents’ depression. Overall, the Brief-PRCNE is a brief, valid, and reliable scale assessing PRCNE in Chinese adolescents. Future directions and the contributions of this research to extant literature on emotion socialization are discussed, with a focus on applying the scale in other cultural contexts.
