African American Religious Views: Implications for Therapy among AA LGB Individuals and the APA Task Force on Appropriate Therapeutic Interventions for Sexual Orientation

Sat, April 15, 10:00 to 11:15am, Hyatt Regency -- Austin, Big Thicket

Abstract

This paper will address research that reflects while religious affiliation is on a general decline in the United States religious affiliation remains strong among African Americans generally (Pew Research Center, 2009). Homonegativity (aka homophobia) has long been viewed as a stalwart attribute among predominantly protestant African American churches. This paper will review recent research which suggests this view is not as firmly rooted as once was believed (Public Religion Research Institute, 2014). In 2009, the American Psychological Association released a Task Force report on working with individuals who experience conflict between religious identity and sexual orientation identity. In this paper, implications for changing attitudes in the African American religious view on sexual orientations will be made in light of the recommendations stemming from the APA Task Force Report on Appropriate Therapeutic Response to Sexual Orientation (2009) as it pertains to LGB African Americans.
