Black girl magic, as a cultural movement, is a phenomenon which contends that black women share an inherited force, a sort of secret and unique way of connecting to the world, despite, and indeed because, of their oppressed positions in society. Although initially begun as a hashtag, I content that Black Girl Magic is not new and arguably has its foundations in Black women activists, writers and scholars. Using womanist theory, and particularly the spiritual aspect of womanism, I suggest that Black women speculative artists have historically contributed to Black Girl Magic by reimaging a futuristic society that reconceptualizes spirituality as a viable political strategy.
